The Times is reporting that in Japan, families are watching record low levels of tv during prime time. Analysists believe that this trend is occuring, in large part, due to the emergence of the extremely popular Nintendo Wii - which is offering familes a more interactive, more group based form of entertainment than television.

A hop, skip and a jump away from Japan, at the E3 Expo in California, Micrsoft recently announced that Disney will be joining an already impressive list of cinematic partners to provide downloadable movies via the Xbox Live.

What do these stories have in common? In both cases, the involve gaming systems moving ever so slowly into the center of the family living room in ways other than appealing to "non traditional" gamers.

The radio was once the center of a families living space. The television soon replaced it. Is the Xbox, Wii, or Playstation destined to be the next centerpiece of the family room?

It may have already happened...

And you thought I was pushing gaming in education BEFORE! =)
